What exactly is an affiliate program?

An affiliate program is set up by the product owner, as an incentive for others (i.e. affiliates) to market the product on their behalf in return for receiving a commission. It’s a win-win situation for both the product owner and you, the affiliate. It’s free to join the program, it’s easy to sign-up and requires no technical knowledge.

Affiliate programs are common throughout the Internet and offer website owners an additional way to profit from their websites. Affiliates generate traffic and sales for commercial websites and in return receive a commission payment. In other words, the product owner gets a sale that they otherwise would not have got, and the affiliate earns commission on a product that they didn’t have to create themselves. Depending on how well you market the product, you can enjoy a healthy additional income stream just by marketing other people’s products.

If you recommend my product Bookzkeeper to your mailing list of clients, colleagues, friends and family, I’ll pay you a 25% commission on the GST exclusive price, which works out to AUD$22.50 on each sale (the full price of the product is $99).

Once you’ve signed up to become an affiliate, you’ll receive a unique affiliate link. You can put this link on your website or use it in emails to your mailing list. I have an automated affiliate system in place which tracks each person who clicks on your link. Each person that buys the product will be recorded in the system and the commission will be assigned to you.

You’ll also receive a login and password to the affiliate area on my website so that you can log in and check how many sales you have made so far, and how many people have clicked on your affiliate link. You’ll also have access to marketing materials that I have put together such as text you can use in your emails, a graphic banner, a text ad, a text link and updates that you can use for Facebook and Twitter.

How do you get paid?

First of all, you’ll need to set up a Paypal (http://www NULL.paypal NULL.com NULL.au) account.

You’ll receive your affiliate commissions approximately 30 days after the end of the month in which the sale was made. Affiliate payments are set up to be paid automatically. The only proviso is that you need to have reached at least $50 in commissions to be paid out, but that shouldn’t be too difficult! Unpaid commission balances will roll over to the next month until such balance is reached.
